Janine Kwon’s Welcome to the Grief Club was written due to the loss of her partner. Grief is often a heavy topic, but the author’s whimsical drawings with a message will help lighten the load. Each drawing and caption are purposeful and on point.
It was such a pleasure to read. The introduction talks about being a part of a club that no one wants to be a part of, but we will all experience grief at some point. There is even a permission to grieve statement, which I found validating.
Making space for grief is important. It’s something that isn’t openly discussed or encouraged in our society, beyond having a few days of bereavement leave, if you are lucky.
When I was having a rough day while grieving the loss of my father, this book made me smile and nod in agreement. Written with sensitivity, humor, and gentle “aha moments”, this book will bring you solace. As mentioned, the drawing and captions work so well together to get the message across.
This work would be a great gift for someone past the acute stage of grief. Janine’s approach is gentle and understanding.
