Benefits of Puzzles
I was losing interest in my old hobbies and needed something that would help me center myself again. I needed to find something I could do in little pockets of time and was portable. Little did I know that this would come from an entirely unexpected avenue.

New Hobby

After a hard time of caring for my mom, I noticed that regular exercise and meditation weren’t helping me take my mind off of my many challenges. Someone casually mentioned Wordle to me and their eyes lit up when they would talk about their daily fix. I noticed the first time I played Wordle, I was fully engrossed and forgot about my worries. I didn’t even notice that 20 minutes had passed by, and I loved being able to solve the puzzle and see my score. There are some days when I do look for hints, but usually, I try not to let solving the puzzle be more important than enjoying myself.

I normally think that crossword puzzles are too hard for my brain. I’ve dipped my toe into the water of crossword puzzles, starting off with easier ones. Usually word searches are more relaxing to me. I respect and admire people who do the NY Times Crossword puzzle. I would never have guessed that the relaxation I need would mean that I would use my brain in new ways.

Beginner’s Mind

I have to stop myself from feeling embarrassed about the levels of puzzles I”m doing, because it’s a skill I haven’t really used. I do notice that things are getting a little easier now, but it’s still challenging.

Research Says

There is scientific evidence that puzzles keep our brains sharp. Crossword puzzles help increase vocabulary and it’s a wonderful conversation starter because you already have to learn so much about history, entertainment, culture, and politics to complete the puzzle. Your knowledge base and the way you approach problems in the world will expand by this engaging hobby.

Daily Ritual

I’m happy to report I really look forward to my Daily Puzzle time, accompanied by a cup of tea or coffee. I’ve heard it’s fun to do puzzles with other people so maybe that will be something I will try next. Learning something new is a wonderful way to add to your life and you never know what you might enjoy.

Stop and Smell the Roses – Part 1

I was recently walking through my botanical garden and I had to remind myself to notice the flowers in bloom. Winter will be upon us and fall is already here. Whatever I had in mind for the day, stopping and noticing this moment was most important to me.

I’ve recently asked myself if I’m enjoying the pace of my life and honestly it’s a no. What I mean is that I try to cram so much into my free time because it’s very precious to me.
