I’ve been practicing another way to meditate using my breath. Usually this is an afterthought or part of a yoga class. I’m not used to just focusing on my breath, but this has been eye opening for me. This has really helped me to feel more grounded in my body in a way that I haven’t been able to access with other forms of meditation.
The only time I’ve focused on my breathing was during yoga class. Sometimes I’ll do deep breathing when I’m stressed, but not in a structured way. Previously I wouldn’t have understood why anyone would just focus on breathing during a meditation session.
The Open Studio, which is a mindfulness studio in California, offered a free challenge. They offer meditation, yoga, and breathing meditation classes. The format includes live, on demand, and soundtracks for those who are more experienced. Each teacher has their own unique style.
While taking the classes, I learned there are so many methods of breathing that I had never tried before. The first class I took was challenging for me and it only lasted ten minutes. I never would have guessed that I would have to practice and train for this. I felt fully present in a way that I never did with regular meditation.
I’ve also enjoyed breathing meditations on the Insight Timer app. I’ve ignored them until now, but the membership with O-P-E-N Studio has opened my eyes to the benefits.
It’s a nice arsenal to have when I’m feeling stressed or having a hard day to help regulate my breathing.I’ve become much more aware of my breathing patterns, especially how I don’t fully breathe and often hold my breath. It may be a game changer for you if you try this form of meditation.
