When I was a little girl, I wanted to try every pastime. My dream was to start a magazine about hobbies. It drove my mom crazy since I was a dabbler in everything. My mom told me I had to choose. She thought that taking dance, violin, and piano lessons would be too much for me. These outlets gave me a source of comfort in elementary school. In my mind, I had no idea that it would require time, dedication, and practice.
The Right Choice
I’m so glad I listened to my heart and I chose musical instruments over dance. It was the right choice for me. I enjoy dance, but to master dance steps isn’t a skill I possess or interested in. I think I was more interested in the pretty outfits. I know intuitively that my first choice was the violin. I can’t tell you how my young mind knew this other than I fell in love with the sound and wanted to learn how to play immediately.
We live in a time with endless tutorials and Youtube videos that can teach us anything you are curious about. Knitting classes and clubs are more popular than ever. Meetups cater to every time of interest, so with a little effort, you can find your tribe. It’s more fun to do a hobby with other people. They can even show you the ropes.
In the Beginning
My journey started with the xylophone. It gave me a taste of the power of creating music and learning musical notes. I’m grateful to my elementary school teachers who showed me what was possible. Is there someone in your life that has inspired you or immersed you into a world that you knew nothing about?
We Need Hobbies
As an adult, all of us have huge responsibilities and the daily grind of life. It seems like endless chores, deadlines, bills, and other pressures. Hobbies create a space for us to play. We all need to learn how to play the way children do and forget about our cares.
Looking for Early Cues
Begin by looking back at your childhood and asking yourself what brought you joy. Your childhood gives clues to secret passions that may be lying dormant, waiting to return with some time, space, and intention.
