Your Wellness Team

Start looking around you during a good season. Find people who will support you on your wellness journey. It’s easy to go on Groupon to find the latest deal, but finding people you can build long relationships with who you can rely on and are compatible with is priceless.

  1. Masseuse – Someone who has the magic touch that speaks your name, whether that’s a reflexologist, Thai or Shiatsu practitioner as examples. Experiment with what helps you relax. Get referrals. People may offer discounts if you see them on a regular basis. We all need human touch to relax our nervous system and build a safe space for your body. I especially appreciate this modality in the winter, during challenging times, and on vacation.
  2. Fitness Professional – If there’s a group exercise class you enjoy, then you’re ahead of the game. I’ve talked previously about the benefits of group exercise in this post. It’s important to have someone who can push you. The few times when I’ve hired a trainer, I noticed rapid improvement and would never have pushed myself so hard. I learned I had to get out of my own way in terms of thinking something was too hard for me. There are wonderful communities online also, but there is something special about in-person classes and interactions.
  3. Customize – Maybe you need a nutritionist because you have very specific eating requirements, or love aromatherapy oils so an aromatherapist could blend custom formulations for your ailments and for the bath. There are too many to list here, but think about what you are facing in this season of life. If you are facing a career transition, then a career coach or career services at your library may be highly beneficial. I would add spiritual director for myself since I appreciate going on a retreat and talking to someone with a religious perspective.
  4. Dream Team – If I could, I’d splurge on a personal chef. At least we have meal delivery services to choose from that are more economical. If there is something you really think would help you, but cost is an issue, then you can brainstorm to see if there’s an alternative that might work.
  5. Mental Health – I think there are a broad range of people who could help you. If you are spiritual, then clergy members would be a great resource. In addition to regular talk therapy, there is art therapy or somatic (body-centered) therapy. Stay open-minded since you may not even know what resonates with you until you try.
  6. Finance professional – Is there someone you can turn to when you have a financial question or about your taxes? Financial wellness impacts every area of your health so start looking around for someone who will educate you in a respectful way and will serve as a resource for the many changes in your life.

Knowing who to call on in the case of an emergency means that you do research ahead of time. Start assembling your Wellness Dream Team. Your future self will thank you.

Stop and Smell the Roses – Part 1

I was recently walking through my botanical garden and I had to remind myself to notice the flowers in bloom. Winter will be upon us and fall is already here. Whatever I had in mind for the day, stopping and noticing this moment was most important to me.

I’ve recently asked myself if I’m enjoying the pace of my life and honestly it’s a no. What I mean is that I try to cram so much into my free time because it’s very precious to me. I feel that I have to cram in what I”m missing. The pace is not sustainable. Everyone has different seasons of life so you may have to examine what is happening in your life.
